With reference to my telegram No 41 of June 17th
last on the subject of the export to Scandinavia of hemp
I have the honour to report that a representative
(Mr.F.C.Blom of Det Oversoiske Compagnie (The Overses
Export Company Limited) of Christiania has been in
Manila to arrange for the direct shipment of hemp from
Hongkong to Scandinavien ports. He has come to an arrange-
ment with the Pacific Commercial Company an American
firm of this city to ship the hemp to Hongkong for
transhipment there to vessels of the Swedish Asistic Line
The agents in Hongkong are to be Messrs Thoresen and
Company, Norwegian fima of that Colony. Before agreeing
to ship the hemp a representative of the Pacific Commerciel
Company celled at this office to inquire whether eny
objections would be raised by the British authorities first
ly as to trahshipment at Hongkong and secondly as to
shipment to Scandinavian porte. He was informed that no
transhipment certificates would be given for such cargo
unless a permit had previously been obtained from the
British authorities either at home or at Hongkong. This
Mr Blom who accompanied him undertook to obtain
and so
far as the Pacific Commercial Company is concerned the
matter is in abeyance.
In the case of any large shipments being made I shall
not fail to notify you by telegraph.
